Laura Favaro v City University
Female academic researching discrimination of female academics alleges discrimination by City University
Laura Favaro, a Spanish sociologist, is bringing an employment tribunal against City University alleging discrimination on the grounds of her 'gender critical' beliefs.
Invited by City University, Ms Favaro accepted a job as Postdoctoral Research Fellow to carry out a sociological study of the “gender wars” in academia.
As part of this research, Ms Favaro began investigating the silencing, discrimination and harassment of female academics who question gender identity theory and those who support it, collecting extensive survey data from interviewees.
Ms Favaro relayed her initial findings in a Times Education article, stating there was
"no doubt that a culture of discrimination, silencing and fear has taken hold across universities in England, and many countries beyond.”
Following the article, Ms Favaro alleges she was told the university deemed her research dangerous, feared publicity of the data and wanted no involvement in the sex and gender debate.
Ms Favaro alleges she was ostracised, subjected to baseless complaints, had her research stopped, her research data confiscated, and has lost her job.
Status
Ms Favaro's case will start on 16th September 2024 and is listed for 12 days at London Employment Tribunal.
Update: On 31st July, Dr. Favaro announced that she and City University had settled her claims. Here is her tweet.
